A swing pair needs an arc. A slide needs a run alongside the opening. A cantilever needs neither but wants a counterbalance behind the post. Which of the three your driveway allows is a geometry question with one right answer, and it is worth settling early.

A gate set well back on a long drive is a different brief — a wider clear opening for a truck and trailer, longer cable runs, and a leaf that has to stay square with no wall to lean on.

Long driveways mean long runs, and every extra foot of run is another decision about power, voltage drop and control.

Ask before the steel is ordered

Broward is inside the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, so the wind rating is settled by code rather than by preference. What is not settled by code is the local review — Southwest Ranches handles that itself, and starting it early is the cheapest decision on the whole project.

Straight answers

  • Shop-fabricated
  • Coastal finish
  • On-site measure
  • Drawn before it's cut
  • Solar & battery options
Do I need pillars?
Not necessarily. Posts, piers and rendered pillars are three different structures, and the leaf and the ground decide which one is right.
The gate is nowhere near a power supply.
That is a normal starting point. Solar, battery and trenched runs are all real options, and the site decides between them.
How far can the control run?
Further than most people expect, but the run length is what decides the cable, the voltage drop, and whether wireless is the better answer.
What does the county require?
Broward sits inside the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, so wind rating is set by code. The permit itself is local, and an HOA architectural review often runs alongside it.
